T1 Day

Today is T1 Day!!! What is T1 Day you might ask? T1 Day is a Day to recognize Type 1 Diabetes and the first day of National Diabetes Awareness Month. This day is dedicated to all things type 1 diabetes.

As most of you know, my son (The Boy) has Type 1. He was diagnosed at 15 months old and basically it's all he has ever known. To honor his life and those other friends, I am going to post with a theme this month. All Things Diabetes.

Now, we are in no ways experts, but we have been doing this for a long time. I hope to encourage you if you are a type 1 or the parent of a type 1 or the family member or friend of a type 1.

I encourage you to check out the JDRF.org website and see all the ways that diabetes has changed through the year. Here are a few of the changes we have been through.

Our first Accu-Chek machine look very similar to this and cost of over $200. It took several minutes to actually get the results of the glucose. First you would get everything ready. Turn on the machine. Get a BIG glob of blood on the tip of the finger and pray it was enough to cover the strip. Press start on the machine which would count down from 1 minute. Then it would beep and you would wipe the blood off the strip and stick the strip in the side of the machine, press the button again and then wait another minute for the results. Ug, the headache of squeezing fingers and waiting for that magic number to appear. They came in only one color and it was pasty white.

This is what The Boy uses now.

Bayer makes this very cool glucose machine that is also a jump drive. NO BATTERIES!!! it charges on your computer and you can download your numbers to see how you are doing. It give you an adverage number and The Boy loves it.

Later I will share our search for a new insulin. When The Boy was diagnosed, his insulin was from a crazy sourse. Can't wait to share that story with you.
